Küchler was a Danish Golden Age painter who moved to Rome in 1830 on a travel scholarship and never came back. He became a fixture in the city's thriving community of Scandinavian artists — he appears in several famous group portraits of the period — and spent his time painting the everyday life of Roman locals. This small study shows a woman from behind, her dark hair pinned in low curls at the nape of her neck, wearing a pale shawl with a delicate lace edge. Two years after painting this, Küchler converted to Catholicism. By 1851 he was a Franciscan friar, living in the San Bonaventure Monastery on the Palatine Hill, painting exclusively religious works for the rest of his life.
