After the Catching of Fish

This conversation is connected to After the Catching of Fish.

Fishing boats sit beached at low tide on a flat, sandy shore. A dark-hulled vessel with faded lettering on the bow dominates the right side, its brown sail furled, an iron anchor and chain lying in the wet sand in front of it. Two more boats rest in the middle distance. The sky is overcast, a pale gray-green, and the sand is painted in broad, wet strokes of ochre and brown. Artan was a Belgian marine painter who worked along the North Sea coast, painting the fishing communities and their vessels with a realist directness influenced by the Barbizon school.
