Afternoon, Ronda, Spain

This conversation is connected to Afternoon, Ronda, Spain.

Oil on panel, about twelve by sixteen inches, painted at Ronda in southern Spain. The view looks out across rolling hills dotted with dark green trees — probably olives — toward a pale blue mountain range dissolving into haze. The colors are warm and high-keyed: ochre, gold, olive green, lavender in the shadows, with patches of exposed rust-brown earth between the trees. Cactus forms are visible in the foreground. The paint is thick and dry, applied in broad directional strokes with the wood panel showing through in places. Innes's mother was of Catalan descent, and he traveled to Spain and Morocco in 1911–1913, chasing warm climates that his doctors had prescribed for the tuberculosis that would kill him in 1914.
