Amphitrite II

This conversation is connected to Amphitrite II.

A large seated female nude — Amphitrite, the Greek goddess of the sea — fills the center of the composition, painted in warm terra cotta against a deep blue ground that shifts from dark navy at left to brighter cobalt at right. Her body is outlined in white and dark ink lines, with minimal interior modeling. A smaller nude figure, possibly a sea nymph or nereid, floats at the upper right. A small wave symbol on a white rectangle sits at the left. The figure is monumental and sculptural, more like a classical statue than a studio nude, and the all-blue background reads as open ocean. Dufy painted mythological and classical subjects throughout his career, often treating them with the same quick, decorative touch he applied to regattas and racetracks.
