Approaching Storm (1938)
This conversation is connected to Approaching Storm (1938).
Two red buildings sit on a flat, sandy shore behind dark blue-black water. One is tall with a peaked roof and a cross, the other a lower rectangular structure. A figure in white rows a small boat toward shore in the foreground, and the sky behind is heavy with gray storm clouds streaked with white. The palette is simple: dark navy water, red-orange buildings, gray sky, ochre land. Archer painted this during his time in the WPA's Federal Art Project, and the composition has a folk clarity to it.
