Approaching Thunder Storm

This conversation is connected to Approaching Thunder Storm.

A near-black sky presses down over a wide beach as dark green waves roll onto pale sand. Rocky outcrops frame the foreground at the left, and a narrow strip of green headland catches the last light at center, glowing against the storm. White-sailed vessels hold their positions in the middle distance, small and unhurried against the dark water. Heade painted approaching storms along the New England coast throughout the early 1860s, and the dramatic contrast between blackened sky and lit land is characteristic of his Luminist approach to atmospheric light. The storm is always coming but never quite arriving.
