Arbres japonisants

This conversation is connected to Arbres japonisants.

A forest floor seen through vertical tree trunks — thin dark trunks frame the composition at the left and right, with a low, flat-topped tree or shrub in muted green at center. The ground is a patchwork of red-brown, rust, orange, and sage green, with what appear to be small white mushrooms or flowers near the bottom. The palette is dominated by earth tones of terra cotta, olive, dark green, with patches of blue-green. The title means "Japanese-style trees," and the composition has the layered, screen-like quality of a Japanese woodblock print, with the vertical trunks dividing the picture plane into narrow bands. Sérusier, like all the Nabis, was deeply influenced by Japanese prints — the flat color, the decorative use of natural forms, the cropping.
