Arenig Fawr, North Wales

This conversation is connected to Arenig Fawr, North Wales.

A dramatic, post-impressionist landscape dominated by the massive, solid form of the Welsh mountain, Arenig Fawr. The mountain is painted in intense, unnatural shades of vivid orange, rust red, and deep green, rising sharply against a bright blue sky filled with thick, sculptural white clouds. The foreground consists of rolling hills rendered in rhythmic, sweeping strokes of yellow and green. James Dickson Innes was heavily influenced by the Fauves, adopting their use of non-representational, high-key color. In this piece, he utilizes a flattened perspective and bold, heavily loaded brushwork to convey the raw energy and imposing scale of the mountain terrain.
