Bay at the Sea with Rocks
This conversation is connected to Bay at the Sea with Rocks.
A coastal bay, almost empty. Pale turquoise water fills the lower half, with a tall golden-orange cliff face catching light at the right and a dark rocky headland in the distance at the left. The paint is quick and broad on a small board, the cliff rendered in vertical strokes of peach, ochre, and gray. Schiess was a Swiss painter from Basel who studied in Rome, Dresden, and Paris, where Monet and Bonnard influenced his work. He painted Mediterranean and coastal landscapes throughout his short career and died in Valencia in 1919 at forty-seven.
