Blumen

August Babberger was a German Expressionist painter, the son of a carpenter from a small town in southwestern Germany. He trained in Karlsruhe and Florence before spending summers painting in an alpine hut on the Klausen Pass in the Swiss canton of Uri — near Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who was doing the same thing at the same time. Blumen dates from 1906, early in his career. Orange sunflowers, white blossoms, yellow honeysuckle, red columbines, and blue bellflowers fill the canvas from edge to edge against a soft green ground, painted in thick, flat strokes. In 1933, the Nazis removed Babberger from his teaching position and branded him a degenerate artist. Nine of his paintings were confiscated from public collections in 1937.
