Chevaux et jockeys

This conversation is connected to Chevaux et jockeys.

A group of horses and riders are gathered on a green field suggesting the paddock before or after a race. The horses are painted in blue, brown, white, and dark maroon, each one a few quick strokes of color with ink outlines that don't quite align with the wash beneath. One jockey wears a yellow cap. The green ground is a broad flat wash, deepening from pale at the top to saturated emerald below, with the upper portion left as bare cream paper. The figures overlap and crowd the center of the composition. Dufy painted horse racing scenes throughout his career — the races at Deauville, Epsom, Ascot, and Longchamp were exactly the kind of elegant social spectacle he was drawn to. Gouache and watercolor on paper.
