Chevaux et Jockeys sur la pelouse

This conversation is connected to Chevaux et Jockeys sur la pelouse.

Chevaux et Jockeys sur la pelouse dates from the mid-to-late 1930s, during the decade Dufy painted horse racing most intensively. This one is gouache on paper — jockeys in colored silks, gentlemen in top hats, women with parasols, all scattered across a green field with the loose, aerial spacing of figures seen from a slight elevation. The drawing is almost transparent in places, some figures fully rendered while others dissolve into a few lines of blue or pink. Dufy started attending the races at Deauville, Longchamp, and Ascot in 1922 and kept painting them for thirty years, developing a visual shorthand for the whole social spectacle — the horses, the clothes, the lawn, the crowd.
