Chinoiserie Wallpaper

A detail from the hand-painted Chinoiserie wallpaper in the Wellington Room, on a vivid green ground. Flowering branches in white blossoms and dark green leaves spread across the surface, with birds in red, brown, blue, and orange perched and in flight among them. A woven basket of flowers hangs from a red cord at the left. Pink peonies bloom at the lower edge, and butterflies are scattered throughout. The green ground is slightly aged and speckled, and the branches are painted with characteristic knobbed bark. This type of wallpaper was produced in Canton workshops for export to European country houses in the 18th and 19th centuries.
