Clouds in Finland

This conversation is connected to Clouds in Finland.

An enormous white-gray cumulus cloud dominates the upper three-quarters of the composition, its rounded mass rising from a base of smaller cloud forms. The sky between and around the clouds is a saturated cobalt blue. Below, a narrow strip of landscape shows a green shoreline, dark water, and pink-brown rocks or stones at the water's edge, with what appears to be a small green boat. The cloud is painted in broad, flat planes of blue-gray, white, and mauve, almost poster-like in their simplification — more like a Japanese woodblock treatment of sky than a typical European plein air study. Krzyżanowski regularly brought his students from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts to Finland to paint outdoors. Oil on canvas or board, 1908.
