Composition (1917)

Three flat geometric planes overlap on a white ground: a large gold-yellow trapezoid runs diagonally from upper left to lower center, a black quadrilateral tucks behind it at the lower left, and a narrow dark maroon rectangle sits partially behind both at the right. The forms are slightly irregular and the paint surface shows visible brush texture within each shape. The white ground is bare and unpainted at the edges. This is from the series Popova called Painterly Architectonics, produced between 1916 and 1918, in which she reduced painting to overlapping colored planes on a white field. Oil on board, 1917.
