Dancing Circle

This conversation is connected to Dancing Circle.

Six women in flowing drapery — green, white, lavender, purple, blue — dance in a ring on a grassy hilltop, holding hands, their hair loose, their bodies leaning outward with the centrifugal force of the circle. The landscape behind them drops away into a misty blue-green valley with distant mountains. The sky is large and luminous with towering gray-white cumulus clouds against pale teal. A birch tree stands at each side of the composition. A red cloth or garment is discarded on the grass at the lower right. Small birds fly in the distance. The palette is cool and silvery with the red cloth and a few small flowers in the grass providing the only warm accents. The surface is detailed and finely worked, closer to tempera technique than to oil impasto.
