Das Gasteinertal im Nebel

The Gastein Valley in the Austrian Alps, dissolving in mist. Snow-capped peaks in pale yellow and white line the upper edge, with blue-gray mountains receding in layers below them. The lower half of the painting is almost entirely fog, soft gray-cream tones with the faintest suggestion of a green hillside and a small building at the lower left. Romako was an Austrian painter who spent most of his career in Rome but returned repeatedly to Alpine subjects. He was largely ignored during his lifetime and rediscovered in the 20th century as a forerunner of Expressionism. This painting shows why: the fog isn't an obstacle to the landscape, it is the landscape.
