The Garden I

This conversation is connected to The Garden I.

A highly abstracted, almost chaotic view of a garden. The canvas is covered in a dense network of short, rapid brushstrokes in varying shades of green, blue, and yellow. A diagonal, ochre-colored structural element—perhaps a wall or a branch—cuts across the upper left. The lower half of the painting dissolves into a complex, shimmering pattern of foliage and light, anchored only by a few darker, blue-black forms near the center. Bonnard’s late landscapes often pushed the boundaries of representation. Here, he abandons clear spatial markers entirely, using overlapping, vibrating colors to replicate the optical experience of looking into dense, sunlit vegetation.
