Der Schauspieler

Der Schauspieler (The Actor) is oil on board, signed and dated 1947. A figure wearing a wide-brimmed hat is constructed from angular, overlapping planes of pink, blue, white, brown, orange, and green. The face is fragmented — two dark dots for eyes sit within a grid of blue and white horizontal stripes, with a large ear or profile element at the right. The hat is drawn in bold black and white outlines, sitting at a slight tilt. The background is divided into blocks of deep green, cobalt blue, olive, bright green, and orange. The paint is thick and applied quickly, with visible brushwork and the board showing through in places. The whole composition has a loose, theatrical quality which fits the title. This is late Adler in London, 1947, two years before his death.
