Deux femmes nues au bord de l'eau
This conversation is connected to Deux femmes nues au bord de l'eau.
Two nude women in a landscape with one seated at the left, her back to the viewer, the other reclining on her side facing outward. The paper's warm brown tone serves as the ground, with the figures and landscape built in quick strokes of ochre, blue, green, and white. Tree trunks rise behind them, and a few small buildings are visible on a distant hillside at the right. The bare paper shows through everywhere — the whole composition is open and unfinished, a study worked up fast. Friesz was a founding Fauvist who exhibited with Matisse at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, then pulled back toward classicism after 1908. These bather compositions belong to that later period.
