Duettino der Passanten

This conversation is connected to Duettino der Passanten.

Paul Klee made Duettino der Passanten in 1938, during his final years in Bern after being dismissed from his teaching position in Düsseldorf by the Nazi regime. His late work is prolific and strange — he produced over a thousand pieces in 1939 alone, many of them built from these heavy black lines and simplified forms. A figure strides across the surface in broad earthy strokes, part drawing, part symbol, the body reduced to a few thick gestures against warm browns and muted cream.
