Eternity

A colossal face emerges from an all-blue field with two eyes, a long flowing beard or veil of white-silver lines fanning downward, and a pointed crown with jagged peaks at the top. Stars are scattered across the surface. The composition is monochromatic — shades of teal, cerulean, slate blue, and silver-white — with the face and crown barely distinguishable from the background, as if the figure is made of the same substance as the sky.  Čiurlionis was a Lithuanian composer and painter who produced roughly 300 paintings and 400 musical compositions before his death at thirty-five. He trained as a musician first — piano and composition in Warsaw and Leipzig — and didn't begin painting seriously until 1904. His paintings are structured like musical compositions, organized in series he titled as sonatas, preludes, and fugues. Tempera on paper.
