Étude de forêt

An undated forest study, likely from the late 1880s or early 1890s based on the looseness of the handling. Trees and foliage fill a vertical canvas in greens, teals, pinks, and warm ochres, with the raw linen visible throughout. The paint is applied in quick, thin strokes that barely cover the surface. Trunks are suggested in blue-gray verticals, leaves in dashes of green and yellow. Morisot's initials are in the lower right corner. It has the quality of a study made outdoors and never worked up further — which, given how radical Morisot's "finished" paintings already were, makes this one almost abstract.
