Farm in Konary (1900)

This conversation is connected to Farm in Konary (1900).

Stanisław Wyspiański made Farm in Konary in 1900 in pastel — the medium he returned to often for his landscapes and domestic studies. The composition is loose and fast: a low farmhouse sprawls across the middle ground in chalky whites and warm yellows, hemmed in by teal trees and a reddish-orange strip of earth. In the foreground, two wooden sledge frames lean at an angle, their dark outlines the most deliberate marks in an otherwise atmospheric image. Wyspiański was primarily known in Poland as a playwright and designer — he wrote one of the most important Polish dramas of the twentieth century and designed stained glass for churches in Kraków — but his paintings have a directness that the larger public works don't.
