Fish Catch and Dawes Point, Sydney Harbour

This conversation is connected to Fish Catch and Dawes Point, Sydney Harbour.

A pile of fish freshly caught and laid out on a sandy shore, with a woven basket behind them and Sydney Harbour visible in the background. The fish are painted with taxonomic precision: a large silver-white fish draped over the basket, a bright coral-red snapper, a brown catfish or flathead, a vivid red-striped wrasse, and several smaller specimens. Each is rendered with careful attention to scale pattern, fin structure, and coloring. Lewin was the first professional artist to live in Australia, arriving in Sydney in 1800. He published the first illustrated book printed in Australia and worked as a natural history illustrator throughout the colony. This painting combines the tradition of the Dutch fish still life with colonial-era scientific documentation.
