Flowering Branches

This conversation is connected to Flowering Branches.

Flowering branches in pale blue, peach, and pink spread across a cream paper ground in a delicate, fantastical arrangement. Bell-shaped flowers in peach and gold hang in clusters, with small blue blooms and fine, feathery leaves along twisting dark branches. The drawing is done in pencil and light watercolor wash, the touch airy and quick. Pillement was a French Rococo painter and designer who specialized in chinoiserie ornament, producing designs for textiles, wallpapers, and porcelain for courts across Europe. He worked for the Queen of Portugal, the King of Poland, and Marie Antoinette, among others. His flowering branch drawings are inventions, not botanical studies, blending European decorative fantasy with the visual language of Chinese flower painting.
