Fresques de Luini, à Lugano

This conversation is connected to Fresques de Luini, à Lugano.

The interior of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Lugano, Switzerland, is rendered with a soft, chalky palette that mimics the texture of the Renaissance frescoes it depicts. Three heavy arches dominate the lower half, supported by thick red pillars adorned with a golden zig-zag motif. Through the central arch, a brightly lit altar is visible, while the upper register is crowded with the muted, pale pink and blue forms of Bernardino Luini’s famous Passion fresco. A founding member of Les Nabis, Maurice Denis was profoundly influenced by early Italian Renaissance art. This piece reflects his lifelong campaign to revive religious art in France, merging modern, flattened spatial arrangements with a deep reverence for classical murals. Oil on canvas.
