From Balestrand at the Sognefjord

Dark mountains rise against a sky in turmoil. Massive clouds in brown, gray, and peach build above the Sognefjord, with a break of blue sky at the upper left letting through just enough light to catch the edge of the cloud bank. The mountains below are near-black, their slopes simplified into broad, heavy forms, with a narrow strip of olive-green hillside at the right. Two tiny white sails sit on the calm water at the base, dwarfed by everything above them. Fearnley was a Norwegian painter who studied in Munich and traveled widely, painting Alpine and Scandinavian landscapes with the dramatic weather sense of the Romantic tradition.
