Garten im Orient (1937)

This conversation is connected to Garten im Orient (1937).

Klee made Garten im Orient in 1937, painted on rough burlap in blocks of pink, lavender, teal, and brown, with arched doorways and bare tree branches drawn in thick black lines. Klee's famous 1914 trip to Tunisia with August Macke had transformed his understanding of color, and the influence of North African architecture and light stayed in his work for the rest of his career. This painting was made in Bern, Switzerland, where Klee had been living since fleeing Germany in 1933. He inscribed the title, date, and catalogue number in his handwriting at the bottom of the burlap.
