Gezeichnetes Mädchen

This conversation is connected to Gezeichnetes Mädchen.

Klee made Gezeichnetes Mädchen — "Marked Girl" or "Drawn Girl" — in 1939, during the astonishing final period in which he produced over 1,200 works in a single year. A simplified figure is outlined in thick blue lines against a blue ground, with patches of green, lavender, and brown filling the body. A circle floats near the head, and the entire composition has the quality of a symbol or hieroglyph. Klee was gravely ill with scleroderma by this point. He died the following year in Bern. His application for Swiss citizenship, filed in 1939, was approved six days after his death.
