Ammi Phillips was a self-taught itinerant portrait painter who traveled between rural settlements in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York for five decades, painting likenesses for middle-class merchants and farmers. Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog is his most famous work, painted in Dutchess County, New York, around 1830–1835. It's one of a group of four portraits of children in vivid red that Phillips made during this period — this is the only one with a cat. The original sold for one million dollars in 1985, a first for American folk art, and is now in the American Folk Art Museum in New York. It was featured on a U.S. postage stamp in 1998.
