Green Hills and the Apennines

This conversation is connected to Green Hills and the Apennines.

A panoramic view of the Italian landscape divided clearly into three horizontal bands. The foreground consists of rolling, verdant hills rendered in soft, localized patches of pale green, sage, and yellow-green. Above this fertile band, the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Apennine Mountains stretch across the horizon in cool tones of pale violet and white. The upper half of the composition is a vast, unmodulated expanse of clear blue sky, punctuated only by a few tiny, isolated white clouds. Davies frequently used pastel to quickly capture the distinct light and topography of his travels; here, he utilizes the medium's matte, chalky quality to flatten the vast distance into a serene, decorative arrangement.
