Grüne Frau mit gelbem Hut I

This conversation is connected to Grüne Frau mit gelbem Hut I.

Hermann Stenner painted Grüne Frau mit gelbem Hut I ("Green Woman with Yellow Hat I") sometime between 1910 and 1914, the entirety of his working life. A woman's face is painted in flat green with red eyes and lips, framed by a wide yellow-orange hat with a pink brim, against a deep blue background. The color is completely non-naturalistic, applied in thick, visible brushstrokes. Stenner was twenty-three when he was killed on the Eastern Front in Poland in December 1914, two months after volunteering for service alongside his friend Oskar Schlemmer. He'd had five productive years — he studied under Adolf Hölzel in Stuttgart, exhibited at the first German Expressionist exhibition in Dresden in 1913, and painted murals for the Werkbund Exhibition with Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister. He left behind 280 paintings and over 1,500 drawings.
