Harmonie lunaire

This conversation is connected to Harmonie lunaire.

Harmonie lunaire is from 1904, well into Alphonse Osbert's Symbolist period — by this point he'd left naturalistic painting behind entirely. A pale figure stands at the edge of a lake, one hand resting against a tree trunk, facing a moon that's just settling behind distant mountains. The entire painting is blue. Osbert was associated with Joséphin Péladan and the Rosicrucian order in the 1890s, and his mature work has that quality: solitary figures in moonlit or twilight landscapes that feel closer to ritual than to scenery. He dedicated this one to a Doctor Cantonnet, inscribed in the lower left.
