Harvest Moon

This conversation is connected to Harvest Moon.

George Inness was one of the most important American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, influenced by the Barbizon school and increasingly by the spiritual philosophy of Emanuel Swedenborg, which pushed his late work toward dissolution and atmosphere. Harvest Moon was painted in 1891, three years before his death. A yellow-white moon hangs low over a flat green field with farm buildings and a smoking chimney at the left, a large tree at center right, and a single figure walking across the middle distance. The sky is pale blue-green with gray cloud and warm peach at the upper edge. Signed and dated in the lower left.
