Head of a Man in a Hat
This conversation is connected to Head of a Man in a Hat.
A face emerges from a dark green-gray ground, built from quick, angular strokes of red-brown, yellow, and teal. The hat is barely distinguishable from the background — the whole thing reads as one dense, worked surface. Weisz-Kubínčan painted portraits of the people around him in rural Slovakia, farmers and laborers, with the same Expressionist intensity he brought to his landscapes and horses. This is a small painting, thickly painted, with the urgency of something made fast. Weisz-Kubínčan was a Jewish Slovak artist who studied in Budapest and Berlin before settling in central Slovakia. He was killed during transport to Sachsenhausen in 1945.
