Herbstlandschaft

Toni von Stadler painted Herbstlandschaft around 1900, during the period when he was becoming one of the central figures in Munich's art world — he had co-founded the Munich Secession seven years earlier and would eventually head the city's art collections. The painting shows a wide, flat landscape under a churning grey sky, with a single large oak in full autumn color — deep burnt orange against the clouds — as the uncontested center of the composition. A dirt road cuts through the foreground and disappears into the middle distance. There's a small figure near the right edge, easily missed. Stadler was known for landscapes built around deep horizons and expansive skies, and this is a perfect example: two-thirds sky, one-third earth, and all the drama in the weather.
