Horse (1937)

This conversation is connected to Horse (1937).

Arnold Peter Weisz-Kubínčan was a Jewish Slovak painter who studied sculpture in Budapest and painting in Berlin before settling in Dolný Kubín in the 1920s. Horses in motion were a recurring subject throughout his career — restless, defiant, often seeming to fly rather than run. Horse dates from 1937, painted in teal, black, orange, and green against a turbulent sky. The brushwork is fast and agitated, the animal barely contained by the canvas. In 1942, Weisz-Kubínčan hid nearly 300 paintings in a suitcase with a friend before fleeing into the mountains to avoid deportation. He was captured and died during transport to Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1945. The suitcase was retrieved after the war and eventually donated to the Slovak National Gallery.
