Jardin sous la neige

A winter landscape is captured through a delicate haze of pastel tones. In the center, a tree heavily laden with thick white snow dominates the composition, its branches painted with quick, impressionistic strokes of pale yellow, green, and white. Behind it, soft pink and peach-colored trees rise against a pale blue sky, and the red roof of a house peeks out on the far right. Denis, a leading theorist of the Nabi movement, famously declared that a painting was primarily a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order. Here, he transforms a cold, natural scene into an intimate, highly decorative tapestry of warm and cool pastels. Oil on canvas.
