Junges Mädchen

This conversation is connected to Junges Mädchen.

Jankel Adler was a Polish-Jewish painter who co-founded the Yung-Yidish group of artists in Łódź, became friends with Otto Dix and Paul Klee in Düsseldorf, and was forced to flee Germany in 1933 when his work was declared degenerate. Junges Mädchen — "Young Girl" — is built from angular, fragmented forms in red, pink, gray, and black on a warm brown ground. A face with two dark eyes sits at the center, surrounded by geometric shapes that suggest a body and limbs. Adler experimented with materials throughout his career, mixing sand and other textures into his paint. Twenty-five of his works were seized from German museums in 1937. After the war he learned that all nine of his siblings had been killed in the Holocaust.
