Kneeling Nude

This conversation is connected to Kneeling Nude.

Christian Rohlfs came to Expressionism late — he was already in his sixties when he started making the work he's best known for, after decades of painting in more conventional styles. Kniender Akt (Kneeling Nude) has the urgency of that late period. The body is rendered in broad strokes, contours outlined with dark lines that feel almost carved into the surface, warm flesh tones pressing against a ground of blues, blacks, and yellows. Rohlfs was in his seventies when the Nazis declared his work degenerate and expelled him from the Prussian Academy.
