Kühe im Herbst
This conversation is connected to Kühe im Herbst.
Kirchner painted Kühe im Herbst between 1924 and 1926, during the years he was living in Davos, Switzerland, where he'd moved in 1918 after a severe mental and physical breakdown during WWI. The Swiss alpine landscape transformed his palette and his subjects — he went from painting Berlin street scenes and Fehmarn coastlines to painting cows, mountains, and farmers. Two purple-green cows stand in a field of pink and ochre, with golden autumn trees and dark green hills behind them against a strip of blue sky. The color is completely non-naturalistic and the forms are flattened into bold outlines. Kirchner signed it in the lower left.
