La Joie de vivre
This conversation is connected to La Joie de vivre.
Suzanne Valadon painted La Joie de vivre in 1911 — a scene of five nude and semi-clothed women bathing in a dark woodland, with a stream running through the foreground and a brown dog standing at the right. The figures are painted in flat, bold outlines with warm flesh tones against deep forest greens. One woman holds a white drape, another raises her arms, a third bends to gather cloth at her feet. The composition borrows from the classical bathers tradition of Cézanne and Renoir, but the bodies are heavier and less idealized.
