La Plage
This conversation is connected to La Plage.
La Plage dates from Dufy's early career, likely around 1902–1906, when he was still painting the Norman coast in an Impressionist mode. A woman in a white dress and hat stands at the right edge of the composition, while other figures sit on the sand behind her, facing a turquoise sea with a steamer on the horizon. The paint is thick and chalky — applied in short, decisive strokes over what looks like board — with the whole scene built from turquoise, white, and touches of red. Dufy grew up in Le Havre and spent these years painting the same beaches at Sainte-Adresse that Boudin and Monet had made famous a generation earlier.
