Landscape

This conversation is connected to Landscape.

This fluid, loosely structured landscape is framed by the dark, vertical trunks and heavy green foliage of tall pine trees in the foreground. The midground dissolves into overlapping, impressionistic strokes of turquoise, deep green, and blue, leading toward a distant horizontal band indicating water or distant hills. Above, the sky is dominated by a massive, pale pinkish-white cloud formation against a deep blue upper register. As a founding member of Les Nabis, the French painter Pierre Bonnard prioritized color and texture over strict perspective. In his landscapes, he often applied paint in small, broken marks to create a dense, tapestry-like surface that flattens the spatial depth and emphasizes the physical qualities of the medium.
