Landscape with Birches

This conversation is connected to Landscape with Birches.

A tight, vertical composition focused on a dense stand of slender birch trees. The white and brown trunks are painted with heavy, textured brushstrokes, cutting vertically across a background of flat, pale blue sky and a deep green field. In the midground, the dark, triangular silhouettes of haystacks or simple rural structures are visible. Paula Modersohn-Becker, a central figure of the early expressionist movement in Germany and the Worpswede colony, frequently stripped her landscapes of extraneous detail. Here, she uses a muted, earthy palette and simplified, almost primitive geometry to emphasize the raw, physical presence of the natural environment over precise realism.
