Le Parc

Tall, thin tree trunks, some dark blue-black, some warm ochre-orange, rise from a green lawn and arc across a heavy sky of olive, gray, and patches of blue. A dark conical evergreen stands at center right. Beyond the trees, pale yellow-white forms suggest distant foliage or light, with a low roofline and a strip of dark red visible at the horizon. The foreground is teal-green, laid flat. This is Derain's post-Fauvist classicism — the palette muted and dark, the composition structured, the landscape treated as architecture. The curving bare branches against the overcast sky give the painting a quality closer to Corot than to the screaming color of 1905.
