Le Petit Pêcheur, Maintenon
This conversation is connected to Le Petit Pêcheur, Maintenon.
Matisse painted Le Petit Pêcheur, Maintenon in 1918, signed in the lower right. A small figure in blue, the little fisherman of the title, stands with a rod along a canal or river in Maintenon, surrounded by trees in every shade of green, from yellow-green to near-black. This painting dates from a quieter period in Matisse's career, after the radical Fauvist years and before the full flowering of his Nice period. The palette is muted compared to the Collioure landscapes — greens and grays and soft browns, with a cloudy sky. Maintenon is a town southwest of Paris, known for its château and aqueduct.
