Le Repos
This conversation is connected to Le Repos.
Le Repos (Rest) was painted in 1906, the year after the Salon d'Automne exhibition that gave Fauvism its name. Three nude figures rest in a pink, blue, and black landscape — a reclining figure at upper left, a standing figure at center, and a seated figure with her back to the viewer in the foreground. A fourth figure, more sketchily rendered, stands at right against bare paper. The drawing is bold and graphic, almost woodcut-like, with thick black contours and large flat areas of coral pink, deep blue, and teal-green. The water in the background is rendered in choppy black hatching against blue. Derain's signature is in the lower right, with the title "repos" written beside it.
