Le soir sur l’étang
This conversation is connected to Le soir sur l’étang.
Osbert painted several versions of Le soir sur l'étang over the course of his career — evening on the pond was a subject he returned to repeatedly. This one is from 1917, oil on cardboard, painted in the small-scale, almost meditative format he often used for studies. A large tree anchors the right side of the composition, its foliage catching the last warm light, while a pond and distant hills recede into blue-violet dusk. The brushwork is fine and even throughout, with a Pointillist texture Osbert adopted in the late 1880s after encountering Seurat and Signac and never fully abandoned.
